Driving the future of maritime energy
Alternative fuel trends and PBT’s role.
The shipping industry is moving through a decisive transition as alternative fuels gain momentum. Biofuels, LNG, hydrogen, and methanol are increasingly in focus, driven by both regulation and demand for cleaner transport. PBT is following these developments closely to keep clients informed and prepared.
Alternative fuels on the rise
Recent data show strong growth in orders for alternative-fueled vessels, reaching 19.8 million gross tonnes in the first half of 2025—a 78% year-on-year increase (DNV). Shipping companies are piloting green ammonia and e-methanol, while Maersk’s new dual-fuel ships are already running on e-methanol from Denmark’s first large-scale production facility (Reuters).
Biofuels are also gaining traction. ISO 8217:2024 now allows up to 100% FAME use, and the IMO has approved conventional bunker vessels carrying up to 30% biofuel blends (Britannia).
