Methanol Fuel

Methanol is gaining momentum as a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, offering notable environmental benefits. As a low-emission fuel, methanol significantly reduces the output of sulfur oxides (SOₓ), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and particulate matter, contributing to improved air quality and compliance with increasingly stringent international regulations such as IMO 2020 and future carbon intensity targets.

Produced from both fossil-based and renewable sources, methanol is versatile—green methanol, in particular, made from biomass or captured carbon and renewable hydrogen, holds strong potential for carbon-neutral shipping. Methanol can be handled using existing fuel infrastructure with some modifications, and dual-fuel engines are becoming more widely available, making it a viable option for both retrofitting and newbuilds.

As the maritime industry continues to pursue decarbonization, methanol stands out as a scalable, cleaner-burning solution that balances environmental performance with operational practicality.
